The registration deadline is March 1 so you can receive your materials in time. Don’t wait too long to register! This is a popular class and is limited to a maximum of 12 people.

Ely folks know there is no bad weather, only bad clothing. A lot of body heat can escape through the top of our heads, so soft, beautiful beaver hats are just the answer for those deep wind chills, which Bert and Mark can attest to. You will learn how to measure, cut and sew pattern pieces from beaver hide. You will receive instructions for adding a liner.

You will receive the materials you need to make the hat, including patterns, needles, and thread. You will receive instructions for stretching the hide, construction of the hat, and adding the liner, where needed, using glue and hand stitching the material of your choice.

On Saturday, March 13, you will meet with the instructors in a live online session. They will give you a step-by-step demonstration of the making of the hats, from cutting through the final stitching, sprinkled with fascinating facts about beavers and some lively stories, which may or may not be true. Then you will have three days to work on your hat, then return to ask Bert and Mark any questions you have about the process. The ending time on the sessions will be flexible if more time is needed.

When you receive your materials, it would be a good idea to lay out the pattern pieces on the hide to familiarize yourself with the process and be ready with questions. However, it might be better to hold off on cutting the pieces until you have seen the demonstration and heard the tips on doing it correctly.

About the instructors: Bert Hyde and Mark Olson are skilled woodsmen who have experienced a lot of cold weather, undaunted. They are long-time friends, do-it-yourselfers, and Ely Folk School instructors and supporters, who get a kick out of showing other people how to do cool things.
