Intro to Pisanki

with John Rajtar

Intro to Pisanki
February 3, 2018
1:30 PM- 5:30 PM

Tuition:$40 Material: $15

The ancient art form of pisanki, “writing” a design on an egg, is inspired by nature and is steeped in tradition. You will learn the old method: a wooden handled metal funnel filled with beeswax is melted under a candle flame. The melted wax is your pencil and the egg is the canvas.

John will provide the design, instruction, and dye. You will need to bring three raw organic eggs, a tapered candle and holder. John has taught students of all ages and loves sharing these traditional crafts. Students 9-years old and up may attend.

About the instructor: John Rajtar lives in the US but comes from Poland. He has been involved in folk art since early childhood, painting on glass and decorating eggs. He makes scratched eggs, eggs decorated with paper cut-outs or straw following the Ɓowicz traditions (nalepianki), pisanki using the wax batik method and acid-etched pisanki.

He has been demonstrating and teaching in Twin Cities art galleries and at the Festival of Nations for 22 years. He received an award of distinction at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
