3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This class is offered free. If you can make a freewill donation of $20 or more or less as you are able, your support will help the Folk School continue to offer classes and pay instructors.

This two-hour class combines a writing workshop with performance poetry. Tim (Raven) and Joey (Loon) have been performing together for several years as the Raven Loonatics, featuring the spoken word and acoustic guitar improvisations. They often invite their audiences to participate in the creation of a poem or story on the spot. The aim of this workshop is to take participants behind the scenes with Raven (Tim) and Loon (Joey) and to provide inspiration, insight and guidance for writers, musicians and interested students of all kinds.

Please have paper and pen or pencil ready to use and bring either a stuffed animal or a photograph of a loved one.

About the instructors: Both Tim and Joey have taught in other settings, both formal (classroom) and experiential. Together and separately, they have led writing workshops for both adults and children. They perform together in coffee houses, auditoriums, private homes and the public square and can be hired for a price if you enjoy unique and live entertainment, often for a dinner party.

Joey Kenig is a singer/songwriter/guitarist with a background in experiential education and a long history of work in the building trades. He began performing as a musician at age 10, and has been writing and performing original and traditional songs and instrumental melodies for the past 60 years. Dividing his time between Ely and St Louis, MO, he performs regularly, both solo and with other musicians.

Timothy Stouffer is a poet and folk artist who lives in Ely with his wife, Jen, and children, Simon, Lucy and Juliet accompanied by cats Minnow and Poirot, and a new Jack Russell puppy named Mr. David Byrne. Tim writes poetry on demand at the Ely Farmers Market and online. He hosts Poets and Pints, an open mic poetry night in Ely, and he is evolving the art of performance poetry. He is currently working on several novels and is known to spontaneously poet. He believes, "Words are lifeblood. They sprout in the dark and bloom in the deliberate light of dawn."
