August 20 and September 24 are additional gardening classes -Sign up individually.

Learn how to make the most out of our short Northern gardening season while implementing sustainable living practices. The classes will be held at Andy Hill's property where he will demonstrate organic procedures, drip irrigation, weed suppression, protection from critters, and methods of fertilizing without using pesticides or herbicides.

You will see a grow house constructed from salvage material and using no green treated lumber. Come prepared to get your hands dirty as you learn how to prepare, develop and harvest your garden. Bring a notebook and/or camera as well as your own ideas and enthusiasm to share with others. Students signing up for all five classes will also receive a 50' row to plant with seeds of their choice and will be able to harvest their bounty. This will require a commitment of giving some intermediate care.

About the instructor: Andy Hill has been implementing creative sustainable living practices in his off-the-grid homestead and loves to share ideas and knowledge with others. He promises there will be no secrets! Andy has taught Sustainable Living classes and Northwoods Gardening at the folk school since its inception, and students appreciate his deep knowledge as a gardener and his positive and helpful teaching style.

Soil Clinic II

Soil Clinic II - Back Yard Composting and NPK Management

What is composting and how do you do it? This class will teach the basics of composting and how to prepare compost to use in your garden. The class will explain the requirements for creating compost that will provide nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N,P,K) for your garden’s soil. Also, a brief introduction to N,P,K plant nutrients will allow the gardener to better manage nutrient status of the soil.

About the instructor: Dr. Cooper received his Ph.D. in Soil Science from Michigan State University, after growing up in Clare Michigan, a small town in North-central Michigan. He taught soils at Cal Poly in SLO California for five years before accepting a position on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota where teaching beginning soils,  soil judging, soil morphology, environmental science and environmental review. He taught a Soil Clinic class at the Ely Folk School in April, 2018, and students begged for more.
