Summer Solstice Celebration: Poetry Reading & Open Mic

Free

with DyAnne Korda

Calendar Jun 21, 2022 at 7 pm

Tuesday, June 21, 2022
7:00 PM

Ely poet DyAnne Korda will give a poetry reading that features her latest poetry collection, The Shore’s Absolute Edge, at the Ely Folk School on Tuesday, June 21 at 7 p.m. Portions of her presentation include a spoken-word performance accompanied by cellist Elliott Sweeney. An open mic will follow. Light snacks and beverages will be available

The Shore’s Absolute Edge illustrates how northern seasons reflect archetypal dreams, character and spirit. The poems in this collection slow readers down and remind them of the commonalities people share. Poetry is a force that allows people to understand their deep connection to nature.

Korda has been published in many journals including The Wisconsin Academy Review and is author of Finding the Lost Woman, This Earth Woman and The Shore’s Absolute Edge. Her poetry has been broadcast on KAXE Radio's morning show, and their literary programs Wordish and Stay Human.

Others in artistic and natural professions have commented on her recent book:

“I allowed myself time to savor a small set of poems daily at quiet times. I felt at peace… The Shore’s Absolute Edge will be shared and it has a home near my books by Terry Tempest Williams, Linda Hogan and other women nature writers.” --Gigi Stafne, Director of Green Wisdom School of Natural & Botanical Medicine

“I am so enjoying The Shore’s Absolute Edge. It is really marvelous - so close to the earth… Meinrad Craighead would have loved these poems.” --Amy Dosser (Kellum), Film Producer, Praying with Images

“The Shore’s Absolute Edge is a fine accomplishment, many keen perceptions.” --Betsy Bowen, Woodcut Artist

Korda was awarded her second Individual Artist Grant through the Donald G. Gardener Humanities Trust and an Artist Access Grant through the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council to complete The Shore’s Absolute Edge.

Tickets: $20

Multi-award winning songwriter J. Jeffrey Messerole is an Americana musician from Iowa's capital city. From the depths of his Iowa roots, Messerole masterfully blends the sounds of his guitar with engaging lyrics, and often a harmonica, to tell gritty American tales that are bound to evoke emotion from all of his listeners. The motifs of his songs can vary as greatly as the wild flowers in the native tall grass. Messerole does frequently write about that flora, as well as the fauna of the region. Not to mention all of it's wild life. Not one to shy away from subject matter, the songs can frequently meander across the lines between love and loss, success and failure, or life and death.

J. Jeffrey Messerole has garnered awards and distinctions that have landed him in the same company as John Prine, Jason Isbell, and John Hiatt. Fans of the aforementioned artists will find satisfaction in his songs as well. Messerole is happy to share his original folk, blues, and alternative country music that's cultivated right here in the heart of the Great Plains.
