Canoe Flotilla to Lac La Croix Pow Wow

Free
Calendar Aug 22, 2019

Thursday, August 22, 2019 to

Sunday, August 25, 2019

We visited in 2016 and had our 13' birchbark canoe blessed by an elder, and the Lac La Croix First Nation has invited us back for their celbration in August. Join us as we resurrect the traditional method of transportation, when flotillas of canoes would arrive each summer from Ely for the festivities.

We'll launch from Little Indian Sioux and camp on Loon Lake. On Friday, we'll paddle to Lac La Croix to camp and then arrive at the pow wow on Saturday morning. The pow wow grounds has tent sites, bathrooms, campfire cooking and a lovely sand beach.

Fun includes games, a feast and competetive drumming and dancing. Sunday morning includes a breakfast buffet and native ceremonies. We hope to bring our 20' birchbark canoe for a blessing by the elders.

For complete details, see the blog on our web site.

Living Arts - A Cultural Presentation

$10

with Dani Pieratos & Chaz Wagner

Calendar Aug 12, 2019 at 5 pm

Monday, August 12, 2019 (Rescheduled from June 26)

5:00 PM - Potluck Dinner - Bring your favorite dish to share and greet new and old friends
6:15 PM - Living Arts Presentation

Come witness resiliency of the Anishaanabe people through the continuance of traditional crafting, singing, drumming, and dancing.

Chaz Wagner, a Traditional Men’s Dancer, Singer, and Drummer, and Dani Pieratos, Jingle Dress Dancer, will present on their dance styles, their Native American regalia, and the accompanying cultural and spiritual teachings of their traditional outfits.

The presentation is intended to demonstrate the Indigenous worldview of art as a means of survival and revival, a holistic perspective that works on both the individual and community levels for healing and growth.

We hope that through the sharing process our audience will rediscover a bit of their own sacred truths in themselves.
