Intro to Home Brewing

Tuition: $100

Learn everything you need to know to brew great beer in your own home. This introductory course will cover equipment, sanitation, recipe planning and ingredients, brewing process, fermentation, bottling, and all other aspects of basic home brewing. Students will receive their own samples of class brew upon course completion.

In between class days, Charlie will be monitoring the process and students are welcome to join him to view the progress.

About the instructor: Jordan “Charlie” Cecil worked several seasons teaching young people canoeing and all skills needed for canoe camping and began guiding in Ely during the summers while he was in college. He began home brewing as a hobby and has continued to brew ever since. He says that guiding taught him how to teach, and three years of home brewing experience has given him a base of knowledge to competently share this craft with others.

Class dates: Mondays: May 1, June 5, July 3, Aug. 7, Sept. 11
Tuition: $20 per class or $90 for all five.

Learn how to make the most out of our short Northern gardening season while implementing sustainable practices. The classes will be held at Andy Hill’s property where he will demonstrate organic procedures, drip irrigation, weed suppression, protection from critters, and methods of fertilizing without using pesticides or herbicides.

You’ll learn how to construct and set up a grow house as well as a conventional space using salvaged materials with no treated lumber. Come prepared to get your hands dirty as you learn how to prepare, develop and harvest your garden. Bring a notebook and/or camera as well as your own ideas and enthusiasm to share with others. The class will also receive a 50’ row to plant seeds of their choice and harvest their bounty.

About the Instructor: Andy Hill has been implementing creative sustainable practices in his off-the-grid homestead and garden for many years and loves to share ideas and knowledge with others. He promises there will be no secrets!  Andy has been a valuable volunteer and instructor, teaching our Sustainable Living classes, including the basics of photo voltaic solar panels, and has installed several systems in the Ely area. Student reviews of Andy’s classes are always positive.

Bring your kids to a magical place where fairies are found, where nature abounds: the Ely Folk School! Each Thursday in July and August there will be a Fairy Funshop with a different theme each time: Fairies of the Air, Water, Earth, Fire, Flowers, Trees, Fairy Basics and Magical Beasts. Join us for some fun activities such as fairy tales, art projects, music, games and treats. Suggested age 5+.

About the instructor: Mica Cascarano Berg has over 30 years of teaching experience and also holds  Masters Degrees in Educational Leadership and Curriculum Development. Her interest in fairy lore evolved due to traveling  to the United Kingdom and this eventually led her to becoming a certified Fairyologist. Mica began offering Fairy Funshops at the Ely Folk School in 2016.

Tuition: $80; Materials: $25

Mosaic designs offer you the opportunity to play with colors and shapes to create your very own design. You will learn how to choose those colors and shapes, then create a mosaic on glass, which will be framed for display. Learning how to apply and grout the colored glass. You will be able to enjoy the look of stained glass without dealing with the complexities of the traditional stained glass methods.

Students need to bring a smock or an apron and glass cutting tools, if you have them.

About the Instructor: Cecilia Rolando is a local artist who loves color in her life and enjoys creating small and large mosaics. She has been involved in the Ely art scene as a participant and promoting other artists for many years Cecilia has taught at the Ely Folk School, Greenstone Public Arts summer art camp for kids, community education classes, many workshops for NLAA and private students. She led the NLAA monthly NLAA Visual Arts Group for over 20 years

Intro to Inkle Loom Weaving

No weaving experience necessary! The inkle loom is a fun and easy way to learn weaving. This ancient craft makes beautiful belts, bands, and straps with many uses. Participants will learn to follow a design, warp the loom, and weave a  tight, even band with good selvedges. Participants will be able to finish a small project by the end of the day and have the confidence to strike out on your own. The Inkle looms and all materials will be provided.

About the instructor: Kelly Whiting has enjoyed experimented with many different looms over the years and is currently working on a Glimakra floor loom, but she still loves the simplicity of the Inkle loom with the complexity of endless, possible designs. Kelly studied fiber arts at the University of Wisconsin/Stout; Menocino College in Ukiah, California; and with Minnesota co-authors of The Rag Rug Handbook. She loves to share her enthusiasm about weaving through teaching this ancient art form.
